South Africa is a relative newcomer to the American wine scene over the past three or four decades; but that region has a rich winemaking tradition that extends well into the nineteenth century. The South African wine industry is also one of the leaders in doing research on wine and winemaking. Their signature white wine (Chenin Blanc) is known as “Steen” and their signature red wine (Pinotage, a manmade cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) was developed by South African wine researchers nearly a century ago. But that is not where their award-winning wines ends, as the terroir is suitable for many V. vinifera wine grape varieties.
