This week’s Wine Wednesday episode on February 16th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern focuses on one of my most favorite wine regions in the whole world, i.e. that of Piemonte (Italy). This region is in the northwest of Italy and is bordered on the western side by a mountain range that separates Italy and France. It is also the homeland of my maternal ancestors, many of whom were from Asti and the agrarian towns and villages to the southeast of Asti. When my grandpap told me that he grew up on a farm, I asked him what they grew. His answer was, “Grapes!”
It is difficult for me to pin down my favorite wines from Piemonte. Owing to the influence of the Romans, roughly 25% of the world’s recognized wine grape varieties are indigenous to Italy. Thus, no matter where you go in Italy, you will find local wine grapes growing everywhere! This translates into endless wine varietals. Piemonte is no slouch when it comes to grape varieties and wine varietals. And, there are almost as many white wines from which to choose as there are reds.
So, spend some time, do the research, and you will be amazed at the wines Piemonte has to offer!
