Wine Wednesday ~ Wines from Cool Climate Grapes

Many grapes are what we call “cool climate grapes.” Think Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Rkatsiteli. Also consider a number of cooler climate hybrid grapes like Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, and Marquette. Such grapes reflect their true typicity when grown in cooler growing regions. These grapes can also grow in warmer regions; but, the desired flavor profile will be considerably different, and that is not a bad thing. It just yields a different outcome.

Our next installment of Wine Wednesday on February 2^nd at 7:00 pm Eastern Time features wines made from the grapes we know as “cool climate grapes.” The cold, hard truth is that cool and cold areas are best suited for white wine production because white grapes generally ripen earlier and they are more forgiving, flexible and adaptable in the hands of a talented winemaker to make a good wine over a wider range of maturity than would red grapes grown in the same cool or cold area. With new viticulture technology in the form of cold-hardy and disease-resistant hybrid grape varieties, the possibility of growing fine wines has expanded into cool and cold areas that were previously thought to be inaccessible to wine production.
