DESCRIPTION:Cool Australia (Cooler Climate Australian Wines)      by Marty Cook \nAustralia. A single nation island Continent. Vast\, mysterious\, unique\, and hot. Much of the interior of Australia is arid\, desert land. The continental heat index is further exacerbated by the proximity of Australia to the hole in the atmospheric ozone layer\, although that trend has been reversing. Australia nonetheless remains relatively hot. \nAustralia is also a significant wine producing nation. The country has a rich wine-growing tradition that stems back to the Nineteenth Century. The first wine that generally comes to mind when thinking of Australian wine production is Shiraz\, which grows well in hotter regions. The flip side in all of this is that there are cooler climate areas in Australia’s coastal regions. These cooler climate regions are conducive to growing cool climate grapes\, chief among which are such varieties as Riesling\, Chardonnay\, and Pinot Noir. \nCome with us on Sunday\, July 11th at 3:30 pm to The Land Down Under as we explore these balanced\, more moderate\, food-friendly Australian wines that are grown in cooler climates from cool climate grapes. “Cool Australia” presenter Joe Via will lead us through this event\, leaning on his prior experience as a wine buyer when he had occasion to visit Australia and learn first-hand about Australian wine production. \nCooler climate Australian wines is a side of Australian wines with which you may be unfamiliar\, and all the more reason to learn about them. DESCRIPTION:———-by Marty Cook———- \nBurgundy. Thought of as a color. Also synonymous with a wine. Burgundy is\, first and foremost\, a place. Located in France\, Burgundy is arguably the most significant wine-growing region in the world. Renowned for its highly prized red wines made primarily from Pinot Noir\, Burgundy (the place) also encompasses a region in its southern tip known as Beaujolais where red wines are made from the Gamay grape. And\, Burgundy is equally as renowned for its incredible white wines made principally from the Chardonnay grape\, although the “other” lesser-known but cold-hearty white grape (Aligoté) is also employed by Burgundians to make a light\, citrusy white wine. \nThis event\, scheduled for this coming Wednesday\, July 7th at 7:00 p.m.\, is not meant to be an in-depth study of the wines of Burgundy. That would require an entire course spanning many hours of exploration. SUMMARY:Cava - A Look at the New Laws
DESCRIPTION:CAVA: the Spanish Sparkler and Updated Winemaking Regs     by Joe Via \nThe wine laws in Spain are changing to identify and dictate regional geography boundaries to distinguish the Cava production D.O.’s.\, Denominación de Origen\, i.e.\, where the grapes are grown. \nThere is not just one production zone\, but four. Two now also have sub-zones. \nIn Spanish\, Cava translates to underground wine cellar. It’s also how quality sparkling wines from Spain are labeled. These quality sparkling wines go through the same process used to make Champagne in France\, which is known as the Méthode Champenoise or ‘Método Tradicional’ – (Traditional Method) and is characterized by a secondary fermentation inside each bottle. \nCava has its own distinctive character due to using native grapes and also because of Spain’s much warmer climate. \nAside from using the same production method\, aging or cellar times differ from Champagne that requires longer development time for some wines. \nFrom very sweet to bone dry\, Cava is produced in a range of categories and types to fit every palate. \nNot all Cava is the same. This is Joe Via\, and it’s been a while since I last did a virtual presentation.  My next virtual tasting is scheduled on Sunday\, June 13th at 3:30 p.m. Eastern/New York Time.  I’m really excited\, as this topic is one of my personal favorites.  At a quick pace\, we will be discussing Washington State’s geology\, and especially its importance or connection with each wine growing area or American Viticultural Area (AVA) created by Glaciers\, and Dams and Floods.  Oh\, my! \n \n  \n  \nClick to see the Washington State AVA map\, then the Columbia Valley AVA map\, and also a two-page infographic and map of the Walla Walla AVA.  We’ll also be pointing out the new AVA’s that have been submitted for approval. There is a lot to cover. DESCRIPTION:A Wine Tour of France\, Part 2 ~ The Loire Valley and Bordeaux \nVive la France!  If you missed part 1\, mark your calendars now so you don’t miss part 2 on Sunday\, May 16th! \nWe continue our tour of France with Kevin Ostrowski and\, during Part 2 of our series\, we will explore two of France’s other major rivers that are also known for fabulous wines.  The regions of the Loire River Valley are known for stately châteaus and signature wines\, from Chenin Blanc to Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.  Next\, we are off to Bordeaux and to the Gironde\, Garrone\, and Dordogne Rivers for probably the most well-known region for fine wine in France. SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ European Wines Outside France and Italy

SUMMARY:Rosé All Day! with Kevin Ostrowski

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines made from Hybrid Grapes

SUMMARY:Presque Isle Wine Cellars: Where Pennsylvania Wine Began
DESCRIPTION:There is a town in the northern most part of the northwest corner of Pennsylvania that is named North East (go figure!).  Near this town is where you will find one of the very first wineries licensed in Pennsylvania soon after the Commonwealth’s legislature passed the Limited Winery Act in 1968.  The name of that winery is Presque Isle Wine Cellars. \nPresque Isle Wine Cellars was founded by a man named Doug Moorhead\, who was the first Chairman of the State Grape Marketing Council\, which developed the legislative proposal that became the Pennsylvania Limited Winery Act in 1968.  Doug is often called “The Father of the Pennsylvania Wine Industry”.  It is Doug’s winery that we will feature on Sunday\, March 21st at 3:30 p.m. Eastern during another in our continuing series of PA Wine Society Virtual Wine Tasting events. \nJoining us as co-host\, and representing Presque Isle Wine Cellars is Bob Green\, who is a man of many talents\, including Executive Winemaker at Presque Isle Wine Cellars.  Bob worked in the cellar with Presque Isle founder\, Doug Moorhead\, and trained at Penn State Erie as a benthologist\, a biologist specializing in studying swamp life and ecosystems. This rigorous scientific and laboratory training and experience in tandem with Bob’s winemaking artistry are a powerful combination that has led to many memorable and award-winning wines produced throughout his career.  Bob is a thoughtful and innovative winemaker whose career spans over 35 years of professional experience as a consulting winemaker as well as being a longtime instructor in Hospitality for Mercyhurst University and lead instructor for the Penn State – Berks Workforce Development Winemaking Certificate.  Bob will feature three of his “soon-to-be-released” wines during our upcoming tasting\, as follows: \n The Wines \n 2020 Pinot Blanc \nPresque Isle is one of the very few regional producers that make a varietal Pinot Blanc. This hard-to-find member of the Pinot family is truly a unique experience. The grapes for our Pinot Blanc come from the vineyards of John and Cindy Moorhead and their great care in the vineyard helps create the superb expression this wine has. Fresh aromas of ripe melons rush to the forefront followed by a hint of citrus and wild flowers on the palate. Enjoy this wine with light appetizers\, buttered langoustines\, and any other light seafood. \n 2020 Grüner Veltliner \nG-V is a remarkably complex dry white wine made from one of Austria’s best known traditional grape varieties that grows wonderfully in Lake Erie vineyards.  It exudes characteristic lime and white pepper aromas along with floral and pear notes. This delightful version has a lovely creamy texture\, but also a crisp finish.  G-V is a versatile food-loving wine and goes especially well with vegetable dishes and light meats and complements foods with acidity and spice.  Presque Isle 2019 G-V just won Double Gold at the prestigious 2021 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition so we can only imagine how good the 2020 might be. \n 2019 Carmine \nUnique to Lake Erie wineries\, the little known vinifera variety Carmine is a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon\, Merlot and Carignan and it combines the strengths of each into an interesting and delightful medium bodied dry red.  Hints of earthy leather from Cabernet Sauvignon\, smooth black currant from Merlot\, and spicy lemongrass\, sassafras and mint from the Carignan.  Aged 15 months in American Oak\, this deeply colored\, cool climate red is easy on the palate with complex flavors. DESCRIPTION:Wine Wednesday (the continued quest for lesser known grapes)                                  by Marty Cook \nOur Pennsylvania Wine Society Wine Wednesday event this past week was such a success that a consensus of its participants determined we should repeat the same theme again! \nFor those of you who were unable to attend our last Wine Wednesday\, the challenge was to avoid purchasing a wine for the event that belonged to the expanded Wine Folly list of eighteen Noble Grapes. \nTHE EIGHTEEN (alphabetized as a memory aid) \nCabernet Sauvignon \nChardonnay \nChenin Blanc \nGewurztraminer \nGrenache \nMalbec \nMerlot \nMoscato \nNebbiolo \nPinot Grigio \nPinot Noir \nRiesling \nSangiovese \nSauvignon Blanc \nSemillon \nSyrah/Shiraz \nTempranillo \nViognier \nFully 50% of the wine we drink comes from that list of eighteen grapes! In the meantime\, we overlook tasting wines that come from nearly 1\,400 other recognized wine grapes. \nIn the interest of combating homogeneity\, please purchase a wine made from grapes NOT on the list of eighteen Noble Grapes. This may take a bit of digging\, or you can just go to your nearest Fine Wine & Good Spirits store and ask your friendly neighborhood Wine Specialist for some help!  Below is a short list of possible lesser-known grape/wine selections that may give some idea from which to choose a wine made with a lesser-known grape varietal.  With nearly 1\,400 grape possibilities\, your success is ensured! \nHere is a short list of possible lesser-known grape/wine selections  \nAglianico\nAlbariño\nApremont (Jacquère is the grape)\nArneis\nBarbera\nBlaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger)\nBobal\nCarménère\nDolcetto\nDornfelder\nGavi\nGros Manseng\nMalvasia\nMarsanne\nMarselan\nMencia\nMondeuse\nMontepulciano\nMuscadet (Melon-de-Bourgogne is the grape)\nNero d’Avola\nPetit Manseng\nPetit Sirah\nPetit Verdot\nPinot Blanc\nPinotage\nRkatsiteli\nRoussanne\nSagrantino\nSaperavi\nTeroldego\nTorrontés\nTouriga Nacional\nVerdicchio\nVermentino\nZweigelt\nPlus\, there are any number of hybrid grapes from which to choose. With the mounting pressures of other personal responsibilities\, I made the decision to discontinue those events before Thanksgiving. And\, although my other responsibilities have not lessened\, I am nonetheless bringing back these events by popular demand! \nOddly enough\, I intend to resume our Wine Wednesday series of VWT events on this Thursday\, February 18th\, at 7:00 pm\, which also happens to be National Drink Wine Day!  Then\, beginning on the following week (Wednesday\, February 24th)\, we will revert back to hosting Wine Wednesday events. \nThere is a new wrinkle to the resurrected version of this VWT series. All of us will join in the tasting with a bottle of wine of our own choosing.
