SUMMARY:Washington State Wines:  A Geology Overview and AVA Update

This is Joe Via\, and it’s been a while since I last did a virtual presentation.  My next virtual tasting is scheduled on Sunday\, June 13th at 3:30 p.m. Eastern/New York Time.  I’m really excited\, as this topic is one of my personal favorites.  At a quick pace\, we will be discussing Washington State’s geology\, and especially its importance or connection with each wine growing area or American Viticultural Area (AVA) created by Glaciers\, and Dams and Floods.  Oh\, my! \n \n  \n  \nClick to see the Washington State AVA map\, then the Columbia Valley AVA map\, and also a two-page infographic and map of the Walla Walla AVA.  We’ll also be pointing out the new AVA’s that have been submitted for approval. There is a lot to cover. Expect at least one and a half hours. \nBecause we would like everyone to have more time to locate and purchase the wines\, please see my wine list recommendation for this tasting below. The focus is on L’Ecole No.41 winery from Walla Walla and because of their use of specific vineyards and AVA’s in these wines. DESCRIPTION:Wines of the Iberian Peninsula       by Marty Cook \nThe Iberian Peninsula can lay claim to a rich and diverse history and culture. Home to two maritime nations that spawned many explorers and Conquistadors that\, rightfully or wrongfully\, settled an enormous portion of the globe in centuries past\, and the destination of choice for many of today’s world travelers\, both Spain and Portugal also hold sway in today’s world of wine production and wine appreciation. \nThere is more to wines of the Iberian Peninsula than just the regions of the Dão (Portugal) or the Rioja (Spain)\, and many grapes are grown throughout the many wine regions of both countries. \nSo\, put on your own explorer’s hat and set out to conquer the Portuguese and Spanish sections of your local Wine & Spirits shop and let’s show a bit of diversity and creativity in our search for grapes other than the usual ones above. Portugal alone grows grapes from A-to-V (Alvariñho to Viosiñho).  Spain has the world’s largest vineyard area\, which gives it an unparalleled wealth and diversity in terms of grape varieties and wine styles: still wines\, sparkling\, fortified\, etc. – a treasure trove from Airén to Xarello.  There is so much from which to choose!    Let’s see some unique wine region and varietal shopping – it will be fun to share! \nDate and time for this upcoming Wine Wednesday is June 9th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern/New York Time Zone. DESCRIPTION:The Wines of South Africa      by Marty Cook \nSouth Africa is a relative newcomer to the American wine scene over the past three or four decades; but that region has a rich winemaking tradition that extends well into the nineteenth century. The South African wine industry is also one of the leaders in doing research on wine and winemaking. Their signature white wine (Chenin Blanc) is known as “Steen” and their signature red wine (Pinotage\, a manmade cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault) was developed by South African wine researchers nearly a century ago. SUMMARY:French Wines Part II ~ The Loire Valley and Bordeaux
DESCRIPTION:A Wine Tour of France\, Part 2 ~ The Loire Valley and Bordeaux \nVive la France!  If you missed part 1\, mark your calendars now so you don’t miss part 2 on Sunday\, May 16th! \nWe continue our tour of France with Kevin Ostrowski and\, during Part 2 of our series\, we will explore two of France’s other major rivers that are also known for fabulous wines.  The regions of the Loire River Valley are known for stately châteaus and signature wines\, from Chenin Blanc to Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.  Next\, we are off to Bordeaux and to the Gironde\, Garrone\, and Dordogne Rivers for probably the most well-known region for fine wine in France. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Wine Tasting ~ A Wine Tour of France – Part 1 \n        Traversing the Wine Regions of Burgundy\, The Rhône Valley\, and Provence \n                   by Marty Cook \n  \nKevin Ostrowski will return on Sunday\, May 2\, 2021 at 03:30 p.m. Eastern/New York time to lead us through this first of a two-part series\, as we explore France by way of its major rivers. \nREGIONS for Part 1   In this session we will float down the Saône and Rhône rivers and broadly look at the wines of Chablis\, the Côte d’Or\, Côte Chalonnaise\, Mâconnais\, and Beaujolais\, through the Rhône Valley and finally landing on the Mediterranean coast of Provence. \nThese are the oldest wine regions in France; not to mention producers of some of the BEST wines of France\, and old-world styles. SUMMARY:Presque Isle Wine Cellars: Where Pennsylvania Wine Began
DESCRIPTION:There is a town in the northern most part of the northwest corner of Pennsylvania that is named North East (go figure!).  Near this town is where you will find one of the very first wineries licensed in Pennsylvania soon after the Commonwealth’s legislature passed the Limited Winery Act in 1968.  The name of that winery is Presque Isle Wine Cellars. \nPresque Isle Wine Cellars was founded by a man named Doug Moorhead\, who was the first Chairman of the State Grape Marketing Council\, which developed the legislative proposal that became the Pennsylvania Limited Winery Act in 1968.  Doug is often called “The Father of the Pennsylvania Wine Industry”.  It is Doug’s winery that we will feature on Sunday\, March 21st at 3:30 p.m. Eastern during another in our continuing series of PA Wine Society Virtual Wine Tasting events. \nJoining us as co-host\, and representing Presque Isle Wine Cellars is Bob Green\, who is a man of many talents\, including Executive Winemaker at Presque Isle Wine Cellars.  Bob worked in the cellar with Presque Isle founder\, Doug Moorhead\, and trained at Penn State Erie as a benthologist\, a biologist specializing in studying swamp life and ecosystems. This rigorous scientific and laboratory training and experience in tandem with Bob’s winemaking artistry are a powerful combination that has led to many memorable and award-winning wines produced throughout his career.  Bob is a thoughtful and innovative winemaker whose career spans over 35 years of professional experience as a consulting winemaker as well as being a longtime instructor in Hospitality for Mercyhurst University and lead instructor for the Penn State – Berks Workforce Development Winemaking Certificate.  Bob will feature three of his “soon-to-be-released” wines during our upcoming tasting\, as follows: \n The Wines \n 2020 Pinot Blanc \nPresque Isle is one of the very few regional producers that make a varietal Pinot Blanc. California wines rival those of anywhere else in the world and\, in some cases\, have been deemed the best in the world; but\, wine in California had humble beginnings. It is a story of religion\, immigration\, hard work\, taking chances and seizing opportunities. \nOn Sunday\, March 7th at 3:30 p.m.\, we will talk about the origins and history of California wine\, how it began\, evolved\, struggled\, and finally flourished. Let us sample some signature brands and toast their successes with “A History of California Wine in Six Glasses”. DESCRIPTION:Wine Wednesday (the continued quest for lesser known grapes)                                  by Marty Cook \nOur Pennsylvania Wine Society Wine Wednesday event this past week was such a success that a consensus of its participants determined we should repeat the same theme again! \nFor those of you who were unable to attend our last Wine Wednesday\, the challenge was to avoid purchasing a wine for the event that belonged to the expanded Wine Folly list of eighteen Noble Grapes. \nTHE EIGHTEEN (alphabetized as a memory aid) \nCabernet Sauvignon \nChardonnay \nChenin Blanc \nGewurztraminer \nGrenache \nMalbec \nMerlot \nMoscato \nNebbiolo \nPinot Grigio \nPinot Noir \nRiesling \nSangiovese \nSauvignon Blanc \nSemillon \nSyrah/Shiraz \nTempranillo \nViognier \nFully 50% of the wine we drink comes from that list of eighteen grapes! In the meantime\, we overlook tasting wines that come from nearly 1\,400 other recognized wine grapes. \nIn the interest of combating homogeneity\, please purchase a wine made from grapes NOT on the list of eighteen Noble Grapes. This may take a bit of digging\, or you can just go to your nearest Fine Wine & Good Spirits store and ask your friendly neighborhood Wine Specialist for some help!  Below is a short list of possible lesser-known grape/wine selections that may give some idea from which to choose a wine made with a lesser-known grape varietal.  With nearly 1\,400 grape possibilities\, your success is ensured! \nHere is a short list of possible lesser-known grape/wine selections  \nAglianico\nAlbariño\nApremont (Jacquère is the grape)\nArneis\nBarbera\nBlaufränkisch (also known as Lemberger)\nBobal\nCarménère\nDolcetto\nDornfelder\nGavi\nGros Manseng\nMalvasia\nMarsanne\nMarselan\nMencia\nMondeuse\nMontepulciano\nMuscadet (Melon-de-Bourgogne is the grape)\nNero d’Avola\nPetit Manseng\nPetit Sirah\nPetit Verdot\nPinot Blanc\nPinotage\nRkatsiteli\nRoussanne\nSagrantino\nSaperavi\nTeroldego\nTorrontés\nTouriga Nacional\nVerdicchio\nVermentino\nZweigelt\nPlus\, there are any number of hybrid grapes from which to choose. DESCRIPTION:by Marty Cook \nSome of you may have participated in the “Wine Wednesdays” Virtual Wine Tasting (VWT) events that I hosted from late July 2020 through mid-November 2020. With the mounting pressures of other personal responsibilities\, I made the decision to discontinue those events before Thanksgiving. And\, although my other responsibilities have not lessened\, I am nonetheless bringing back these events by popular demand! \nOddly enough\, I intend to resume our Wine Wednesday series of VWT events on this Thursday\, February 18th\, at 7:00 pm\, which also happens to be National Drink Wine Day!  Then\, beginning on the following week (Wednesday\, February 24th)\, we will revert back to hosting Wine Wednesday events. \nThere is a new wrinkle to the resurrected version of this VWT series. All of us will join in the tasting with a bottle of wine of our own choosing. We will take turns “going around the room” to let everyone know what we are drinking\, where it is from\, how it tastes\, and any other pertinent information.
