SUMMARY:Botrytis Wines - Liquid Gold Treasures
DESCRIPTION:August 21st 7 p.m. at the Hilton the PA Wine Society is having a truly extraordinary event.  I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this is a once in a lifetime tasting.  We will be tasting ten sweet wines from four different countries; France\, Germany\, Hungary and Austria. \nAll of these older vintage wines have been carefully procured over the last nine months.  Two things to know:  1) the wines are already aged and at the peak drinking window and   2) though still a high-end event… for the liquid gold these wines deliver the price point is exceptional.  We are drinking some very expensive wines and sharing the bottle cost! \nUnlike most dry wines\, sweet wines seem to be almost immortal\, drinking well after evolving for decades. \nWe’ll sample a Chenin Blanc from Vouvray in the Loire Valley from the outstanding 1989 vintage.  The Austrian Trockenbeerenauslese wines are from the 1990’s. \nOne objective I have for this tasting is to show how food-friendly these wines can be.  These wines are not just for sipping after a meal.  I for one have been drinking a German Auslese Riesling with my New Year’s Day pork and sauerkraut for the last few years.  The sweet wine pairs perfectly with the sauerkraut and the bracing acidity is a perfect foil for fatty pork and buttery mashed potatoes. \nFor your event\, I’ve asked the Hilton to prepare a wide assortment of dishes ranging from savory to sweet.  I would suggest that attendees save their wines throughout the tasting to compare with each dish. \nFor any doubters\, I’d like to add that these wines are not Black Box Moscato or Tears of Gettysburg. DESCRIPTION:There are wine tastings\, and then there are evenings that remind you why wine is worth obsessing over in the first place. \nOn Friday\, September 11\, the Pennsylvania Wine Society will virtually welcome wine writer\, educator\, and certified sommelier Jessica Dupuy for Italianity: Discover the Soul of Italian Wines\, an evening built around one of the most fascinating wine countries in the world and the culture that makes its wines so distinctive.  The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg. \nJessica is a Wine & Spirits columnist for Texas Monthly and Forbes.com\, with work also appearing in Food & Wine\, Decanter\, Wine Enthusiast\, Imbibe\, GuildSomm\, SevenFifty Daily\, Southern Living and National Geographic Traveler. She holds the WSET Diploma and is a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. \nShe is also one of the hosts of Another Bottle Down\, which happens to be my favorite wine podcast. The show explores the stories\, people\, places and ideas behind wine and spirits without making the subject feel like homework\, which is exactly what great wine education should do. \nAnd this particular event has a wonderful connection to the podcast. \nJessica recently devoted an episode of Another Bottle Down to Italianity\, the book she co-authored with Master of Wine Andrea Lonardi. That book\, and the idea behind it\, helped inspire the wines we selected for this tasting. \nRather than treating Italy as one enormous wine region\, Italianity explores the identities\, traditions and sense of place that make Italian wine so endlessly varied. \nYou can listen to the episode here.  \nThat philosophy will be very much in the glass on September 11.  We will travel from the volcanic soils of Mount Etna to the alpine vineyards of Alto Adige\, through Piedmont and into Tuscany\, with eight wines representing dramatically different expressions of Italy: \n\n2020 Tenuta di Fessina Erse Etna Bianco\n2025 Antinori Guado al Tasso Vermentino\n2025 Elena Walch Pinot Grigio\n2024 Abbazia di Novacella Schiava Alto Adige\n2022 Travaglini Gattinara\n2021 Planeta Etna Rosso\n2020 G.D. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed.  Contact the Treasurer to be placed on a waiting list in case of a cancellation.\nCome join us at 7 p.m. on Friday October 2 at the Hilton Harrisburg for a fun and educational event led by PWS member Brian Grant focusing on the excellence and diversity of wines from the Napa Valley region of California and its neighbor Sonoma. \nIf you think this region of California is only good for Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon\, your mind (and taste buds) will be opened to the true variety of excellent wines this region produces. \nNapa Valley has ideal conditions for growing wine grapes due to its warm\, dry summers\, cool nights\, and diverse soils. The valley’s Mediterranean climate provides plenty of sunshine throughout the long growing season to ripen the grapes\, while cool evening temperatures help preserve acidity and flavor. \nThe mountains on each side of the valley shield it from harsh weather conditions and provide a varied topography and diverse well-drained soils that  create different microclimates and terroir allowing the region to grow a wide range of grape varietals.  Together\, these features allow Napa to produce high-quality\, flavorful wines with complexity and structure. \nThese ideal conditions together with the expertise and dedication of Napa winemakers led to the triumph of two Napa wines at the now-famous Judgment of Paris in 1976.  French wine judges tasting blind picked two Napa wines as the winners\, with Chateau Montelena taking first in the Chardonnay group and Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon besting the red class. \nIn fact\, three of the top four Chardonnays were from California\, including another Napa entrant from Spring Mountain.  Napa had arrived on the distinguished wine scene with a bang and hasn’t let up since.   \nFor this 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris\, we’ll taste two recent vintages from each of the winning producers. \nWhile the primary focus of the evening will be on Napa wines\, and the variety this classic region produces\, we’ll dip a little into its beloved neighbor\, Sonoma. \nSonoma shares many of the same characteristics with Napa that make it an outstanding wine region – diverse geography and climate and a long growing season with warm days and nights. \nTo highlight the excellence and diversity of wines from the region we’ll be tasting \n\n2025 Lasseter Enjoue\n2024 Stags’ Leap Sauvignon Blanc\n2024 Rombauer Vineyards Chardonnay Carneros\n2022 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay\n2021 Lasseter Chemin de Fer\n2022 Stags’ Leap Petite Syrah\n2022 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon\n2022 Stag’s Leap Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon\n\nThese wines will be accompanied by three small plates selected by the Hilton chefs to complement the wines: \n\nCrab Salad\, Cucumber Cup\, and Grilled Peach with Lemon Tarragon Dressing\nRoasted Pork Belly with Fig Jam\, Arugula and Pistachios\nBraised Short Rib and Thyme Fondant Potato with Red Wine Reduction\n\nFor any food allergies or restrictions\, contact the Treasurer and we’ll try to accommodate your needs. \nThis is an event you do not want to miss so sign up early in the Shoppe on the PWS website.   \nThe reservation deadline for this early October 2nd event is Tuesday September 29th\, so don’t delay! \nTraveling to attend?  Contact the Hilton Harrisburg here for room reservations. \nPurchase reservations on the Shoppe Page of this website. \n        Members—$125 \n        Patrons—$120 \n        Nonmembers—$145

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour de France—all four corners and places in between\, on Friday\, November 6th\, 7 p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg.  Our tour guide is Sunil Khanna from Hand Picked Selections. \nWe’re visiting key wine-growing regions and will also delve into lesser-known areas like Savoie in the French Alps.  In total\, seven French grape-growing regions\, allowing us to delve into the signature grape varieties\, terroir (soils\, climate\, exposition\, etc.) and winemaking practices that make these growing regions and wines so special and unique. \nThere is after all good reason in our selections: \n\nChampagne is the world’s reference point for sparkling wine.\nThe Central Loire Valley is considered the apex for Sauvignon Blanc.\nBurgundy is the holy grail of the wine world; the benchmark for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.\nChateauneuf-du-Pape makes the most sought-after GSMs in the world.\n\nAll of the featured wines are grown and produced by independent winemakers and small\, family estates. DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re team coupe or team flute\, this year’s Champagne Brunch promises to be extra special.  We’re doing a horizontal tasting of six same-vintage Champagnes from one biodynamic grower—Benoît Marguet!    \nAn Eben Lillie blog describes Marguet wines: “…There is a subtle creaminess on the palate\, framed by precise acidity and complimented by a long\, mineral finish. I have wondered how he attained such fantastic richness with the wines and was sure it was a question of batonnage\, but I’ve asked Benoît and he doesn’t practice batonnage; just barrel fermentation and long lees aging\, which seem to clearly open up the wines and give them density and a very delicate oxidation…” \nThe domaine\, Marguet Père et Fils\, dates back to the 19th century and Benoît’s mother’s side of the family\, the Bonneraves\, began producing estate bottled Champagne in the early 20th century. Since taking over the family domain in 2005\, Benoît has been an avid proponent of biodynamics\, much to the shock and dismay of his father and others in the region.  Often this is the story when a younger generation takes over and proposes these types of changes to the farming and winemaking philosophy\, but without fail\, the older generation eventually comes around when the biodiversity begins to return to the vineyards\, and when the wines start to express levels of complexity and quality that are undeniably improved. \nBenoît did not just turn to biodynamics to improve the soil and the wines\, however. When you meet him\, you quickly get the sense that Benoît believes embracing biodynamics improves his life and the farming\, and the wines follow suit.  \nBenoît Marguet is a true believer in the power of biodynamics to change not only wine\, but the vineyard and life\, for the better\, and is passionate about the relationship between the vignerons\, the vines\, and their wines.  His vineyards are plowed by horse\, fermentation is with native yeasts\, his wines see little to no sulfur\, and his viticulture shows clearly in the finished wines. \nAt a recent trade event a colleague in the industry turned to Lillie after tasting with Benoît\, with a look of wonder and amazement. “Have you tried these wines?” she asked\, almost out of breath from excitement. He replied: “Of course! Marguet is the best!”  Later he recalls  realizing that there are likely many people out there who are unfamiliar with these fantastic Champagnes.  Lilley writes: “I am never disappointed with a bottle from Benoît Marguet… I keep finding myself coming back to these wines\, and… I’m pretty sure you will too once you try them!” \nThe wines we’ll taste are from six different Marguet vineyards in six Grand Crus of the Reims and Côte de Blancs regions of Champagne.  We’ve pre-tasted these wines and each is delightfully unique – it will be a great experience of grapes and terroir.   The Champagnes will be paired with small plates. Chef Jason Viscount always delivers fabulous plates for us and we’ve come to look forward to the food as much as the bubbly! \nThis event is social\, with no formal presentation\, so you can relax and slowly c-o-n-t-e-m-p-l-a-t-e the wines and the food pairings. \nContemplation is appropriate for these true biodynamic wines from Domaine Benoît Marguet where the belief is that “the horse is a key element in ma \n \nintaining a natural balance in the vineyards.  It allows us to work the soil in a gentle and respectful way\, without using heavy machinery that can cause significant damage.” \nHorses create a unique link with the elements that make up the terroir.  The horse allows direct connection to the chalk\, the mineral substrate of the vineyar \nd\, which is essential to the quality of the grapes and the wine produced.  In many civilizations\, the horse is a sacred animal\, non-predatory and contributing to social and spiritual balance…  Using horses to work the soil\, promotes growth of endemic flora present in the vines and contributes to the biodiversity of the vineyard.  \nThis maintains a natural ecological balance that is favorable to the growth of the vine and the production of quality grapes.” \nRobert Panzer says this about Benoît:  “Over the past few years\, his wines have only increasingly become personal highlights of what I consider to be some of the most pure\, exciting\, complex\, and delicious bubblies in all of Champagne.   After tasting his lineup of 2020 single parcel/single village wines\, this theme stands to resonate with any and all who dive in—as every stop in the range was once again plain outstanding. \nI continue to be inspired by his sense of conviction in action of creating uber pure\, unadulterated Champagnes of vibratory intensity/nuance that speak clear as day of their singular origins\, pinnacle examples of “natural wine” purity. \nThe requisite fanatical attention to detail required to execute such goals is clearly well installed at this point in his career\, a mature apogée of what has been a long road of conviction and devotion.  True to his skateboard-punk-turned-nature-reverent-vigneron independent personality\, he is serenely unaffected by the pressures of “what the world thinks”\, unwaveringly true to his own compass.   \nHe eschews the reductive critic number game\, is increasingly intolerant of the pushy self interest of businessmen\, and is making choices for his life that reflect the kind of relational holism that define his cosmic “world view”… I applaud such integrity and independence\, and only continue to appreciate him as a friend and teacher…” \nJoin us for this informal brunch celebration to see for yourself how wonderfully unique Benoît’s wines are.  We hope all of you can join us Sunday\, December 6th at NOON Greystone Public House\, 2120 Colonial Rd\, Harrisburg. \nNote that there is a caterer early reservation DEADLINE of Sunday\, November 29th! \nMake RESERVATIONS on the Shoppe Page of this website. \n        Members—$175 \n        Patrons—$170 \n        Nonmembers—$195 \n
