SUMMARY:Board Selections - Reservations closed - Call to be on a Wait List
DESCRIPTION:Reservations are closed for this event.   If you’d like to be on a wait list\, please contact the Treasurer.\nOn Friday evening\, October 10\, 7 p.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg we will have Board Selections. This is a different type of event for the PWS. Instead of the usual formal event format with presentations\, we are hosting an informal\, highly personal event. \nSix PWS Board members will pour wines they’ve selected. There will be a wide variety of wines from all over the world; something for everyone. You will have the unique opportunity to personally interact with each board member.  Board members will be at separate pouring tables to tell you about each wine along with information on its origin and the winery that produced it. \nYou may feel free to ask questions about the wine\, its appellation and the region it comes from. No doubt\, you will gain further insight by discussing each wine with the PWS Board member. \nKeep in mind that this type of event will be the only one of its kind for years! It will be a really fun and educational experience. \nA bread\, cheese and fruit nibbles station will be provided\, as well. \nThe Wine List \n  White \nDomaine des Aubuisières Vouvray Cuvée de Silex 2023 \n100% Chenin Blanc from some of the best soils in Vouvray; two flint-stone parcels of 55-year-old vines in Touraine\, Loire Valley\, France.  The wine shows a marvelous balance of explosive fruit and titillating sensation.  The juice is done entirely in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats.  The finished wine is aromatic and fresh on the nose\, gentle on the palate\, with a tense finish.  It boasts flavors of creamed honey\, baked apple\, lifted white blossoms and exotic fruit cut by vibrant\, mouthwatering acidity and a lick of flint.  Expressive and exceptionally well balanced on the palate with lots of lemon and a trace of anise. Decanter 91 Points. \nThistledown Gorgeous Grenache Blanc 2024\, South Australia \nPalate – An explosion of flavor meets suave\, seductive personality! Bright\, tangy citrus laced fruit with hints of honeysuckle and lemon balm. Taut\, yet textured and complex\, this is a beautifully crafted white that breaks the mold. \nClos Dalian Garnacha Blanca 2023\, Spain \nClos Dalian Garnacha Blanca is a bright white wine with a golden hue. Aroma of ripe white fruit and minerals. Creamy\, fleshy\, fresh\, and very seductive in the mouth. Its mid-palate is quite long and silky.   Wilfred Wong 89 Points \nPeju Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley Legacy Collection 2023 \nThis wine has vibrant aromas of grapefruit and tropical citrus that leap from the glass. The tropical notes linger\, while hints of green apple and pear emerge. White peach and passion fruit weave together on the palate to create a soft yet refreshingly crisp finish. The layers of this wine create so much intrigue on the palate; they invite you back for another sip and yet another. — Winemaker’s notes \n Ruhlmann Riesling Vielles Vignes (Old Vines)\, Alsace\, France 2021 \nThis wine is yellow\, slightly golden with a beautiful shine. It has a strong attack of black currant and lemongrass with nice freshness. It’s very floral with a dominance of fruity Riesling. At the end\, there’s a note of vine flowers. It has a beautiful persistence of a powerful fruitiness\, due to the heavy soil where the vines are grown. This highlights the characters of lychees and mandarins.  Ruhlmann is a historical producer of fine Alsatian wines. This wine is 100% Reisling from old vines that are over 30 years old. \nForge Cellars Freese Vineyard Dry Riesling Finger Lakes 2021 \nFocused and tight\, with a mix of yuzu\, yellow apple\, fennel and almond notes that race along through the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2028. Wine Spectator 90 Points \n    \nRosé \nLasseter Family Vineyards\, Enjoue 2024 Rose \nGrenache 42%\, Clones: Alban\, 224\, 136; Mourvèdre 36%\, Clone 369; Syrah 12%\, Clones: 470\, 877\, Counoise 10%\, Clone: Tablas Creek. \nEnjoué Rosé is a “true” Rosé of Grenache\, Syrah\, and Mourvèdre\, inspired by our travels through Provence in the South of France. Fruit is ripened specifically to produce a highly aromatic\, flavorful\, crisp Rosé\, rather than through the saignée method using grapes that have been ripened for red wine production and “bled” to produce rosé as a by-product of red wine production. \nThis dry rosé\, whose name means “playful” in French\, is scented with strawberry and ruby grapefruit\, and offers a delicate palate of stone fruit\, with a bright refreshing finish. – Winemaker Notes \n  \n   Red \nTenuta Degli Dei Le Redini Toscana 2021\, Tuscany\, Italy \nThe nose opens with lots of fresh blackberry\, cassis\, dark cherries\, earth and plum\, leading into Madagascar vanilla pod\, minerality and wild herbs. The palate is rich with a noticeable suppleness\, yet plenty of poise and energy\, too. – Winemaker’s notes \nLe Redini is a gorgeous\, beguiling wine. It is a blend that is unique to the estate in Tuscany\, 90% Merlot and 10% Alicante. This is a wine of aromatic presence and nuance. It presents a compelling mélange of ripe red cherry fruit\, wild herbs\, mint\, rose petal and cinnamon. – Vinous \nTenuta Degli Dei is a gorgeous estate surrounded by horse paddocks in Panzano\, Tuscany. The 2021 is a blend from a site with loose soils rich in schistic galestro. What stands out most is the soft and soothing texture of the wine that wraps thickly over the palate.  There are no rough edges here. The finish is driven by dark cherry\, spice and baking chocolate. – Wine Advocate   Vinous 93 Points\, Wine Advocate 93 Points\, James Suckling 93 Points \n  \nLasseter Family Vineyards\, Chemin de Fer 2021 \nJusti Creek Vineyards\, Sonoma Valley \n67% Grenache\, 26% Mourvèdre\, 7% Syrah \nNamed for the French phrase “railroad\,” Chemin de Fer is a nod to the Lasseter family’s love of trains and their travels through Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the South of France. This Rhône-inspired blend comes from the original Justi Creek estate in Glen Ellen\, a historic site that once hosted some of California’s earliest French winemakers in the 1890s. \nIn the glass\, it shows a deep garnet hue and an aromatic burst of ripe raspberry and warm spice. The palate is generous yet refined\, offering layers of black and red berries\, a subtle touch of cocoa\, and supple tannins that glide into a long\, lingering finish. This wine has a lengthy streak of 90+ point scores from professional wine critics. Quite a testament to the precision of the winemaking and character of the vineyard. \nThe fruit benefits from warm days tempered by cool ocean breezes funneled through the narrowest stretch of Sonoma Valley\, creating dramatic temperature swings that allow for slow\, even ripening. Rocky alluvial soils add structure and depth\, while goblet-trained vines contribute to the wine’s Old-World charm. \nElegant\, expressive\, and deeply tied to its terroir\, Chemin de Fer captures the romance of Rhône wines with a distinctly Sonoma voice. Jeb Dunnuck 93 points \n  \nCannonau Di Sardegna 2020 Riserva\, Sardinia\, Italy \nThe nose begins bright and light\, with aromas of cranberry and hibiscus\, then turns darker and richer with plums\, tobacco and a swirl of chocolate and vanilla. Figs and a potent florality underscore the plum note on the palate\, before the chocolate current swells into a tidal wave on the finish.  James Suckling 94 Points\, Wine Enthusiast 91 Points \n  \nBodega Garzon Uruguay Reserva Tannat 2022 \nElegant and powerful\, Garzon’s Tannat Reserva features juicy berry\, plum\, and red cherry aromas with a hint of spice on the nose. The full-bodied palate is complimented by ripe tannins\, balanced acidity\, and a lingering freshness. – Wine.com \nJames Suckling 92 Points\, Wine Spectator 91 Points\, 90 Wine Enthusiast 90 Points\, Decanter 90 Points \n  \nYou definitely will not want to miss this event! Register early so you do not get shut out! \n  \nPlease send any food allergies to the Treasurer.   Reservation deadline is Tuesday\, October 7th.   You may make reservations via the Shoppe Page on this website. \n            Members—$90 \n            Patrons—$85 \n            Nonmembers—$110 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tiny Bubbles... Champagne Brunch
DESCRIPTION:“Pour the Champagne and let its mousse rise\, like thousands of sparkling smiling eyes.” – Jared Brown \n  \nEsteemed for its freshness\, vitality\, and sensuality\, champagne is a wine of great complexity.  It is exciting to try new Champagnes. This year’s event has wines not standard shelf\, a good thing with Champagne\, as with most wines.  Here’s how it all bubbles up. \nWe begin with an especially festive Champagne experience you may have heard about and turned a nose up—Champagne on ice (and we don’t mean the bottle).  Several of the big Champagne houses\, following the lead of Moet and Chandon\, have created more intense\, high dosage wines for the express purpose of serving on ice.  If your palate is offended\, we understand. Know however that these are popular products (marketed outside France of course).  As ambassadors to extend PWS’s educational mission\, for all things wine and open to all learning\, we will serve the aperitif\, Moet and Chandon Ice Imperial on ice with fruit garnishes to ready you for brunch.  Many wine enthusiasts have been pleasantly surprised by this drink with the depth and complexity of Champagne\, and approachable cocktail-like friendliness.  Recall it’s made for ice. \nFor brunch we’re pairing a vintage Blanc de Blancs of 100% Chardonnay\, two very nice Pinot Meunier dominant selections\, and two different style Pinot Noir dominant selections.  Here’s the menu. \n  \nShrimp and Seabass Galette with Haricot Vert and Dijon Hollandaise \nGeoffroy Volupte Blanc de Blancs 2015 \n  \nTrout Escabeche with Pickled Radish and Rye Bread \nLaherte Freres Extra-Brut Ultradition NV \n  \nSmoked Salmon Terrine with Wasabi Tobiko and Cucumber Salad \nLaherte Freres Extra Brut Rose de Meunier NV \n  \nOrganic Bell & Evens Chicken Roulade with Mushroom Stuffing\, Potato Savonette\, Red Grapes \nMouzon Leroux et Fils L’atavique Tradition Extra Brut Champagne Grand Cru NV \n  \nCrème Brulé with Blackberries and Short Bread Cookie \nHenri Goutorbe Cuvee Prestige Premier Cru Champagne Brut NV \n  \nTo experience these taste sensations\, join us Sunday\, December 1st\, 12 Noon at the Greystone Public House\, 2120 Colonial Road\, Harrisburg. \nVeterans of this event look forward to it as a social occasion\, as well as opportunity to enjoy Chef Jason Viscount’s fabulous food with some special bubbly. \nThis is an event not only for your own pleasure\, but a great opportunity for planning your own dinners and celebrations.   It’s the perfect way to sample multiple Champagnes\, without investing a small fortune\, to make better-informed choices on your own. \nPlease note that booking availability ends a bit sooner than usual to provide Greystone the final count. The deadline is NOVEMBER 25th—yes\, before Thanksgiving!  Grab your seats now\, as many have already\, so you don’t need to worry. \nPlease inform us early of any food sensitivities by email to the Treasurer.  We will do our best with Greystone to find options for you. \nYou may purchase reservations by going to the Shoppe Page of this website. \n    Member —$155 \n    Patron —$150 \n    Nonmember —$175 \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Portugal on the Greens - Outdoor Informal Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us at noon on Sunday\, July 14th for a \nPortuguese-inspired lunch\, paired with highly regarded and flavorful Portuguese wines on the Fairway Terrace at Greystone Brew House\, located at the Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg\, PA.  The wines\, food\, and location make this a truly unique social event. \nWe’ve selected three different white wines\, three unique red wines and a late-bottled vintage Port to showcase the broad range of Portuguese wines and to please any oenophile.  This often-overlooked wine region is worth exploring and PWS has arranged this event to do just that. \nThe three white wines we’ll be tasting demonstrate the diversity that Portugal’s wines have to offer. \nNo Portuguese wine tasting is complete without a Vinho Verde.  Ours is Regueiro Trajadura Alvarinho 2021\, a blend of Alvarinho and Trajadura grapes from the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal.  This wine is fresh and fruity with a nice minerality.  Expect sensations of apple\, pear and citrus in this wine. \nFrom the Tejo region in central Portugal\, Lagoalva Branco Tejo 2022 combines aromatic Fernão Pires grapes with Arinto and Sauvignon Blanc for a perfect summer wine offering with palate-pleasing tropical fruit and citrus notes. \nHerdade Do Esporao Reserva 2021 (Wine Enthusiast 92 points) is an almost equal blend of Antao Vaz\, Arinto\, and Roupeiro grapes from Alentejo in south-central Portugal.  This organic wine displays bright notes of citrus and mint with hints of white pepper and nutmeg. \nMoving on to the reds\, we’ll enjoy three distinct and excellent red wines from different Portugal regions. \nQuinta do Crasto Douro Superior 2016 (Wine Spectator 92\, Wine Advocate 91) is a dry\, light-bodied red from the World Heritage designated Douro Valley.  Crafted from a blend of Tinta Roriz\, Touriga Franca\, Touriga Nacional and Sousão and aged for 12 months in 35% new French oak\, the wine presents both an earthiness and vibrant acidity. \nFrom DOC Do Tejo\, Pinhal Da Torre Resoluto 2015 is comprised of Alicante Bouschet\, Touriga Franca and Trincadiera.  This well-regarded wine was produced using traditional methods with slight maceration and no filtration aging for 18 months in French oak barrels.  Ripe red fruits with notes of cocoa and spices are rounded out with a good acidity and dry tannins. \nAlentejo’s red wine entry is Vinha da Coutada Velha Red Alentejano 2020 (Wine Enthusiast 92). This Wine Enthusiast “Best Buy” wine exhibits black and red fruits with hints of chocolate and mocha and refined tannins. \nFinishing off the event and perfectly paired with the chef-prepared chocolate dessert\, will be Warre’s Late Bottled Vintage Port 2010. This Port is also rated 92 points by Wine Enthusiast and we’re sure you’ll agree with the reviewer’s assessment—this Port is refined\, mature and ready to enjoy! \nWe’ll enjoy the wines and great food on the terrace overlooking the golf course for a perfect summer afternoon.  (Don’t worry – there is covering should a summer shower decide to visit us that day!) \nChef Jason created a menu designed to pair with Portuguese wines that includes the following: \n\nPortuguese Salt Cod Fritter accompanied by Peri-Peri Sauce \n\n\nHeirloom Tomatoes with Cucumber\, Grilled Red Onion\, Roasted Peppers with Valdeón Blue Cheese Dressing \n\n\nRoasted Pork Tenderloin and Red wine-braised Chorizo\, Yellow Potatoes\, Garlic and Kale \n\n\nChocolate Mousse with Chocolate Salami (think cookie)\n\n Please inform us early of any food sensitivities by sending email to the Treasurer. \nYou do not want to miss this event\, so sign up today.  Reservation deadline is Sunday\, July 7th.    Make reservations via the Shoppe Page on this website. \n       Member —$105 \n       Patron —$100 \n       Nonmember —$125 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sparkling Wines
DESCRIPTION:The holidays are fast approaching as is the PWS Sparkling Wine event featuring wines from the United States and Europe that are unique and flavorful.  Come join us for this festive event on December 1st and taste some new sparklers you’ll want to add to your repertoire. \nWe’ll start with one of the most unique wines we’re tasting\, Aquilini Già Bella Brut Rose Red Mountain 2020\, from Washington State’s prestigious Red Mountain AVA.  Even hardcore oenophiles have tasted few\, if any\, Cabernet-based sparkling wines.  This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sparkling wine is so different that it’s worthy of standing on its own at the beginning of the evening. One might expect a Cabernet sparkling to be heavy but it’s not – it’s bright and lively and will start our evening off well. \nThe next two wines\, both from Europe\, will be paired with the first plate of hors d’oeuvres\, the Spanish Cava and the Italian Prosecco.  Our Cava is from “one of Spain’s finest Cava producers” (Wine Advocate).  This flagship wine of Juvé & Camps is cellar-aged\, organic and seeks to be Spain’s answer to champagne at a fraction of the cost. \nThe prosecco will not be your ordinary\, “add to orange juice for a mimosa”\, Prosecco.  As wine expert Kermit Lynch has said\, “For most wine drinkers\, “Prosecco” is a stand-in for a cold\, crisp\, sparkling white wine that should be pretty cheap. There’s nothing wrong with that desire\, but there is such a large range of wines bearing the Prosecco DOC and DOCG that they are worthy of as much understanding and differentiation as any other style of wine.”  The prosecco poured at this event will be worthy of exploring; it will be neither ordinary nor cheap! \nThe Livio Sassetti Pertimali Prosecco Superiore Brut is a blend of 90% Glera\, 10% Bianchetta from the Valdobbiadene DOCG.  The wines of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG represent Italy’s highest-quality designation in the Prosecco category. For over a century\, the Sassetti family has been cultivating some of the best vineyards in the area\, thanks to the very favorable terroir. \nFor our middle wine pairing\, we are in the southwest of the United States with a New Mexico produced Blanc de Noirs and a California champagne style brut from Anderson Valley.  Both are a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and produced using the traditional method\, méthode champenoise\, but the Blanc de Noirs is predominantly Pinot Noir (75%) and the Anderson Valley sparkling wine is predominantly Chardonnay (60%).  It will be quite interesting to compare similar but different wines in this pairing. \nThe last pairing of wines are two wines from the same region of the Languedoc-Roussillon in southwest France – Limoux. However\, the wines are very different.  One is a Crémant Rosé – similar in style to a Champagne rosé and based on Chardonnay blended with Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir – and the other a Blanquette de Limoux – an ancient style wine that was one of the first styles of sparkling wines ever produced.  The Blanquette de Limoux is 90% Mauzac\, a white aromatic grape that ripens late permitting a slow initial fermentation with plenty of residual sugar to facilitate the natural second fermentation in the bottle the following spring.  Its name is derived from the French “blanc” meaning white because a fine white down grows on the bottom of the leaves so when the wind blows the vines look white.  Unless you’ve had a wine from Limoux\, it’s unlikely you’ve tried a Mauzac-based wine so this should be a treat! \nThe wines: \nAquilini Già Bella Brut Rosé Red     Mountain 2020 \nJuvé & Camps Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 2017 Cava \nLivio Sassetti Pertimali Prosecco Superiore Brut \nGruet Blanc de Noirs \nRoederer Estate Brut Anderson    Valley \nGerard Bertrand An 825 Crémant de Limoux Brut Rosé 2020 \nDomaine Martinolles Le Berceau Blanquette de Limoux \n  \nWines will be served with small plates prepared by the Hilton Culinary Team: \nHalibut Fritter w/Red Pepper   Marmalade \nSweet Potato Latke and Grilled Shrimp Salad \nWild Mushroom Puff Pastry Tart w/ Caramelized Shallot & Truffle Aioli \nPlease inform us of allergies well in advance in reservation notes or email to the Treasurer \n \nDon’t forget there is a door prize of wine flutes from Lehman Glass of Rheims\, France for one lucky taster! \nDeadline for reservations is November 28th and our holiday sparkling events often sell out so don’t wait\, sign up today! \n      Member – $80 \n      Patron – $75 \n      Nonmember – $100 \nYou may MAKE RESERVATIONS via the SHOPPE PAGE of this website.   Please note any food allergies EARLY in the notes section of your reservations or email the treasurer with concerns. \n

What do I mean by off the beaten path?  There will be no Chardonnay\, no Champagne\, no Bordeaux—BUT there will be fabulous wines that you may have missed in the PLCB system. \nThe wines by region include: \n\nA sparkling wine we think is a perfect summer aperitif—Vouvray (and that means Chenin Blanc).\nWhite Chateauneuf du Pape. It is fresh and lively and perfect for summer.\nAlsace Pinot Noir—a stunner of a Pinot Noir —wild and “lightly animal” per the winemaker. Lovely harmony\, with length and balance.\nSavoie Mondeuse Noir— a ruby-colored\, delicate\, floral\, nearly ethereal red—terrific with a slight chill. It’s a Weygandt import.\nCahors Malbec—nobody does Malbec better. SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Anything But Chardonnay
DESCRIPTION:It’s ABC Day on Wine Wednesday! Last week we looked at some of our favorite Chardonnays\, and no doubt a few of you were not enamored with the topic.  Well friends\, this is your Wednesday\, as this week we will be discussing literally any wine you want to highlight\, as long as no one even mentions the word “Chardonnay.”  So\, bring your Cabernets\, Rieslings\, Viogniers\, Malbecs\, Albarinos\, Merlots\, or one of any of the hundreds of other grape varieties at your disposal\, and tell us why what you picked is so much better than that stuff we discussed last week. \nAll details for each individual event are posted here closer to the actual event and distributed to PWS members via e-mail in advance of the event each week. \nPlease check back here the week of the event for Zoom connection information. \nMost important is to reserve your Wednesday evenings now for this fun and interesting exploration of wine!

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Chardonnay
DESCRIPTION:This week for wine Wednesday will take a look (and have a taste) at what is perhaps the world’s most polarizing wine; Chardonnay.  Originally from Burgundy\, used in all kinds of sparkling wines\, and without the distinctive flavors of other white varieties like Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling\, Chardonnay is said to be the most popular white wine on earth. On the other hand\, it’s a topic of conversation so adamantly admonished by its detractors that it may keep a couple of our regulars from even opening their Zoom app to join the call. Let’s talk it through and see if those who like it can get to the bottom of what makes a good Chardonnay\, while those who don’t are encouraged to show and tell us why you feel it’s worst.

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines from Old Wineries
DESCRIPTION:“I love everything that is old; old friends\, old times\, old manners\, old books\, and old wines.” -Oliver Goldsmith\, The Vicar of Wakefield.  It sounds like old Oliver would be thrilled with this weeks topic of discussion for Wine Wednesday\, as we old friends will be talking about old wines\, some of which will undoubtedly come forth from old manors\, as we look at wines from wineries that have been in existence for over 100 years.  \n  \nAll details for each individual event are posted here closer to the actual event and distributed to PWS members via e-mail in advance of the event each week. \nPlease check back here the week of the event for Zoom connection information. \nMost important is to reserve your Wednesday evenings now for this fun and interesting exploration of wine!

So\, grab a bottle of your favorite summertime wine elixir\, take pictures of the front and back labels\, send those photos to WineCat@pa.net by 11 PM Tuesday for inclusion in our weekly PowerPoint slide show\, and get ready to share some facts and tasting notes about the “summertime sipper” of your choice! \nNo reservation needed!   Simply join us on May 25th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time via the Zoom link shown below! \n  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/86904511117?pwd=WXlGZlF4d2VjbXNmMjNOMzFOZEQ2UT09 \n  \nMeeting ID: 869 0451 1117\nPasscode: 755935 \nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,86904511117#\,\,\,\,*755935# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,86904511117#\,\,\,\,*755935# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 869 0451 1117\nPasscode: 755935\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kvcPfu4JL \n

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ -Wines of Eastern Europe
DESCRIPTION:This week’s Wine Wednesday on May 11th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time makes a course correction that takes us back across the pond to Europe and specifically to Eastern Europe. But\, for this trip\, we are going a little deeper into the eastern part of the continent. Get ready to talk about favorite or newly discovered wines from countries such as Bulgaria\, the Czech Republic\, Hungary\, Poland\, Romania\, Slovakia\, Moldova\, Croatia\, or The Ukraine. You will have to do a little digging to find examples of wines from these areas. But\, if you can find them\, you will be pleasantly surprised. Winemaking in these nations has a rather ancient history. In fact\, some of the grape varieties you will encounter in your research are very ancient\, although they are not necessarily household words. As wine education goes\, this topic will teach us a lot about a totally different chapter in our appreciation of wine. \nSo\, locate a bottle of Eastern European wine\, take some pics of the front and back label of that wine\, send those pics to WineCat@pa.net by Tuesday evening\, and get set to join us for this edition of Wine Wednesday on May 11th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time! \nNo reservation needed – simply join us close to 7 pm on the on the Zoom link below.  We look forward to seeing you then! \n https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81812254012?pwd=ZHJlVURzenFDNVhuRE45c0htQ0paQT09 \n Meeting ID: 818 1225 4012\nPasscode: 815721 \nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,81812254012#\,\,\,\,*815721# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,81812254012#\,\,\,\,*815721# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 818 1225 4012\nPasscode: 815721\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/k5pvFboL

SUMMARY:Winemaking for Mere Mortals!
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, March 13th at 3:30 pm Eastern (New York) Time\, the Pennsylvania Wine Society will feature Virtual Wine Education event on winemaking. But this segment will be a departure from the programs you have come to know from the PWS. It will be a one-hour overview of winemaking at home\, as performed by award-winning amateur winemaker Kevin Donnelly. \nIt discusses grape varietals\, fruit wine (“country wine”) options\, the equipment needed\, the basic chemistry involved\, and winemaking procedures. During this segment\, Kevin will demonstrate how people at home can emulate the “big guys” at commercial wineries\, resulting in high quality wines that are often as good as\, or even superior to\, the quality of commercial wines. \nKevin will discuss costs involved\, starting as low as $300\, and how you can grow your hobby as your interest and proficiency grows. \nThis is a great introduction to a centuries old tradition that will show you how you can get involved in becoming a bona fide Winemaker of quality wines that you would be proud to serve to your family and friends! \nKevin Donnelly has been a home winemaker since 2003\, and consistently wines multiple awards from various Home Wine Competitions\, including 2018 Best of Show “Golden Bear” award from the California State Fair. Kevin has been the chairman of the OC Fair’s Home Wine Competition for five years and continues as a board member of the Orange County Wine Society in California. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, March 13th at 3:30 pm Eastern (New York) Time to take in this feature. It is sure to be enjoyable and informative! \nNo reservations needed.   You can join in on the Zoom link shown below. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/83255848103?pwd=U1UrdGh6dzBBWVkyUU1DY1lPOTkrUT09 \nMeeting ID: 832 5584 8103\nPasscode: 345350\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,83255848103#\,\,\,\,*345350# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,83255848103#\,\,\,\,*345350# US (New York) \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 832 5584 8103\nPasscode: 345350\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kRPYgd55H \n

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ The Rioja Region of Spain
DESCRIPTION:Our next installment of Wine Wednesday on March 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time embraces the wines that emanate from the Rioja region of Spain. The Rioja (phonetic spelling RREE’-OH’-hah) is the oldest Designation of Origin in Spain (1925) and the first to earn Calificada status (1991). A broad yet landlocked geographic expanse stretching from west to east across the northcentral reaches of Spain\, the Rioja is really three subregions representing three distinct terroir. Rioja is perhaps the most recognized Spanish wine region among Americans and is best known for berry-scented\, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. It is arguably Spain’s top wine region. It is certainly the most famous\, rivaled only by Jerez. There are so many other noteworthy Spanish wine regions\, but we begin with Rioja\, which requires much exploration before we move on to other Spanish wine regions later this year. So\, enjoy Rioja while we linger in it for now! \nSo\, please secure a bottle of wine from the Rioja region and join us on Wednesday\, March 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time for this week’s iteration of Wine Wednesday! And\, please remember to send pictures of your wine bottle’s front and back labels to WineCat@pa.net for inclusion in this coming week’s PowerPoint slide presentation. Please do so no later than Tuesday evening\, March 8th. \nWe look forward to seeing you this Wednesday on March 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time for Wine Wednesday! \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/85241909890?pwd=eVl3MW8rVnBSamhZenhKbDhPUFNJZz09 \nMeeting ID: 852 4190 9890\nPasscode: 473732\nOne tap mobile\n+16465588656\,\,85241909890#\,\,\,\,*473732# US (New York)\n+13017158592\,\,85241909890#\,\,\,\,*473732# US (Washington DC) \nDial by your location\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 852 4190 9890\nPasscode: 473732\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kef5JnobY4

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ The Veneto Region of Italy
DESCRIPTION:Our topic for Wine Wednesday on February 23rd at 7:00 pm Eastern time examines the wines of Veneto\, Italy. This region is in the northeastern corner of “the boot” that describes the peninsula that is Italy. It is generally a cooler climate for growing grapes. The Veneto region produces more whites than reds under the DOC designation and is notably home to the Prosecco and Soave wines. However\, continued recognition for other wines from the region\, such as Valpolicella\, Amarone\, Soave and Bardolino\, help keep Veneto in the spotlight. \nThe red wines of Veneto are also identified with several techniques which are used to increase body\, structure and intensity to various of the wines. Such processes as Ripasso and Appassimento yield stunning results that we will discuss this week. \nSo\, secure a bottle of wine from this region and join us for Wine Wednesday on February 23rd at 7:00 pm Eastern time to learn “the rest of the story.” And\, as always\, please take photos of the front and back labels of your bottle and email them to WineCat@pa.net by 11 p.m. Tuesday for inclusion in our PowerPoint slide presentation. SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Piemonte\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:This week’s Wine Wednesday episode on February 16th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern focuses on one of my most favorite wine regions in the whole world\, i.e. that of Piemonte (Italy). This region is in the northwest of Italy and is bordered on the western side by a mountain range that separates Italy and France. It is also the homeland of my maternal ancestors\, many of whom were from Asti and the agrarian towns and villages to the southeast of Asti. When my grandpap told me that he grew up on a farm\, I asked him what they grew. His answer was\, “Grapes!” \nIt is difficult for me to pin down my favorite wines from Piemonte. Owing to the influence of the Romans\, roughly 25% of the world’s recognized wine grape varieties are indigenous to Italy. Thus\, no matter where you go in Italy\, you will find local wine grapes growing everywhere! This translates into endless wine varietals. Piemonte is no slouch when it comes to grape varieties and wine varietals. And\, there are almost as many white wines from which to choose as there are reds. \nSo\, spend some time\, do the research\, and you will be amazed at the wines Piemonte has to offer! Then\, meet us on the Zoom link below on Wednesday\, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time for Wine Wednesday! Arm yourself with a suitable bottle of wine from Piemonte and\, as always\, send photos of the front and back labels from your wine bottle to WineCat@pa.net by 11 p.m. Tuesday for inclusion in Wednesday night’s PowerPoint slide show. \nNo reservation needed – simply join us close to 7 p.m. Wednesday via the Zoom link below.   We look forward to seeing you then! \nClick on the Link below to Join the Wine Wednesday Zoom Meeting: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/87198948005?pwd=VmNnUk5HOTgvQm4zR2RYc3BxdlFUQT09 \nMeeting ID: 871 9894 8005 \nPasscode: 423725 \nOne tap mobile \n+13126266799\,\,87198948005#\,\,\,\,*423725# US (Chicago) \n+16465588656\,\,87198948005#\,\,\,\,*423725# US (New York) \nDial by your location \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York) \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \nMeeting ID: 871 9894 8005 \nPasscode: 423725 \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kx94siID \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines from Indigenous Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Our next Wine Wednesday episode on February 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern/New York time is “Wines from Indigenous Grapes.” This topic almost screams “Italy!” The Italian peninsula is home to nearly 25% of the world’s 1\,200+ recognized wine grape varieties. But\, many other wine regions and countries can also claim a number of wine grapes as indigenous to their wine growing regions. Determining a grape variety’s place of origin has become far easier in light of the modern-day work of geneticists in the field of ampelography\, which is the science concerned with the identification and classification of grapevines. So\, do your research\, because a Tanat from Uruguay is not an example of an indigenous grape. Neither is Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley an example of an indigenous grape. Nor is Sauvignon Blanc indigenous to New Zealand. This is an exercise in finding the roots of the varietal that you are drinking! \nPlease join us this week for Wine Wednesday on February 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern/New York time when we explore the genealogy\, so to speak\, of your favorite varietal! And\, as we do every week\, send photos of the front and back of your wine bottle labels to WineCat@pa.net by 11 pm Tuesday for inclusion in this week’s PowerPoint slide show\, which is when you will have your 3 minutes of fame as you feature your chosen indigenous varietal! We look forward to seeing you then! \nNo reservation needed – simply join us via the Zoom link below close to 7pm Wednesday evening. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/88095815870?pwd=dTdQT0kwQWovcWp6Rjc4RjhSWXdOZz09 \n Meeting ID: 880 9581 5870\nPasscode: 551519\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,88095815870#\,\,\,\,*551519# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,88095815870#\,\,\,\,*551519# US (New York) \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 880 9581 5870\nPasscode: 551519\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/keisFJJuuB

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines from Cool Climate Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Many grapes are what we call “cool climate grapes.” Think Riesling\, Pinot Noir\, Chardonnay\, Sauvignon Blanc or Rkatsiteli. Also consider a number of cooler climate hybrid grapes like Seyval Blanc\, Vidal Blanc\, and Marquette. Such grapes reflect their true typicity when grown in cooler growing regions. These grapes can also grow in warmer regions; but\, the desired flavor profile will be considerably different\, and that is not a bad thing. It just yields a different outcome. \nOur next installment of Wine Wednesday on February 2nd at 7:00 pm Eastern Time features wines made from the grapes we know as “cool climate grapes.” The cold\, hard truth is that cool and cold areas are best suited for white wine production because white grapes generally ripen earlier and they are more forgiving\, flexible and adaptable in the hands of a talented winemaker to make a good wine over a wider range of maturity than would red grapes grown in the same cool or cold area. With new viticulture technology in the form of cold-hardy and disease-resistant hybrid grape varieties\, the possibility of growing fine wines has expanded into cool and cold areas that were previously thought to be inaccessible to wine production. \nSo\, pick up a bottle of your favorite cooler or even colder climate wine made from cool climate grapes and join us for Wine Wednesday on February 2nd at 7:00 pm Eastern Time and share your thoughts about your wine with us! And\, as usual\, take photos of your bottle’s front and back labels and email them to WineCat@pa.net by 11 PM Tuesday for inclusion in our weekly PowerPoint presentation. \nNo reservations needed – just join us close to 7 PM Wednesday Eastern/New York time via the Zoom link below.   We look forward to seeing you then! \n  \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/89067997194?pwd=Wm53T21KTE0wNDh2Ymo4TUh2dWtIZz09 \nMeeting ID: 890 6799 7194 \nPasscode: 229114 \nOne tap mobile \n+13017158592\,\,89067997194#\,\,\,\,*229114# US (Washington DC) \n+13126266799\,\,89067997194#\,\,\,\,*229114# US (Chicago) \nDial by your location \n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) \n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York) \n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) \n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) \n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver) \nMeeting ID: 890 6799 7194 \nPasscode: 229114 \nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kYV7STwlM

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines of Sicily
DESCRIPTION:Our next episode of Wine Wednesday takes place on January 26th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time and features “The Wines of Sicily\,” the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. This island\, located at the “toe of the boot” as described by the shape of the Italian Peninsula has had a rather storied past of being overrun and occupied by invaders representing multiple cultures. The Sicilian dialect and their traditional foods reflect the multiple raiders that swept across the Sicilian landscape. This is hardly surprising\, as each of these intrusions\, in some cases\, occupied the island for centuries at a time. As a result\, Sicily has a rich and unique culture\, especially with regard to the arts\, music\, literature\, cuisine\, and architecture. \nThe terrain of inland Sicily is mostly hilly and is home to Mount Etna\, the largest active volcano in Europe. The volcanic soil in those areas of the island that have been influenced by volcanic action bodes well for vineyards and winemaking. Some ancient archeological findings testify that Sicily was one of the first Italian region to practice the art of enology. More recently\, Sicily has seen a growing interest from modern day winemakers who are strongly committed to innovating\, transforming and improving the quality of Sicilian vineyards. The current wine industry has introduced new grape varieties\, experimented with new techniques and modernized the wineries. The sun\, the land\, the hills and the sea breeze have done the rest\, providing an extraordinary variety of Sicilian wines which have taken a leading role on the international stage. \nSo\, secure a bottle of Sicilian wine and join us on Wednesday\, January 26th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time when we gather again for Wine Wednesday. As usual\, please photograph the front and back labels of your bottle and email them to WineCat@pa.net by 11 p.m. this coming Tuesday evening for inclusion in Wednesday evening’s PowerPoint presentation. We look forward to having you aboard as we share with each other our own impressions of the wines we will discuss during Wine Wednesday! SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines of the Balkans
DESCRIPTION:Our next Wine Wednesday on January 19th at 7:00 p.m. Eastern/New York Time revolves around the wines of the Balkans. As wine regions go\, the Balkans comprises one that is lesser known by most\, yet possesses more ancient roots in practicing the craft of winemaking than today’s more well-known wine regions. \nThere are eleven countries that comprise the Balkans\, namely Albania\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Croatia\, Greece\, Kosovo\, Montenegro\, North Macedonia\, Romania\, Serbia\, and Slovenia. These countries have a rich history and winemaking tradition and may present a challenge in finding a representative example of their wines\, due to availability of wines from the Balkans in our domestic fine wine shops. Still\, there are many possibilities from which to choose\, if you do some sleuthing! I personally know that there are a number of both red and white Grecian wines available\, as well as many wines from Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Croatia\, Montenegro\, Macedonia and Romania on the shelves of local wine shops. Ask your Wine Specialist for assistance and you will be surprised at the number of Balkan wines you will find! \nSo\, please join us at the Zoom link below with a bottle of wine from the Balkans for our next Wine Wednesday on January 19th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time when we explore more about this genre of wines! And\, as always\, please send photos of the front and back labels of the bottle of wine that you plan to feature to WineCat@pa.net by 11 p.m. Tuesday evening for inclusion in Wednesday’s PowerPoint lineup of featured wines! \nWe look forward to seeing you this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern/New York Time for this week’s episode of Wine Wednesday!  Please join us via the Zoom link below. \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/88103200571?pwd=KzlxU3AyandTMWo2NkQ3elJjdWZpUT09 \n Meeting ID: 881 0320 0571\nPasscode: 651275\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,88103200571#\,\,\,\,*651275# US (Chicago)\n+16465588656\,\,88103200571#\,\,\,\,*651275# US (New York) \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 558 8656 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 720 707 2699 US (Denver)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\nMeeting ID: 881 0320 0571\nPasscode: 651275\nFind your local number: https://us06web.zoom.us/u/kb57jlFiDj \n

SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday - Wines of South West France
DESCRIPTION:Our next Wine Wednesday on January 12th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time takes us to a somewhat unsung\, yet fascinating region of France known as South West France (or\, Sud-Ouest as the French call it). As the folks at Wine Folly say: \n“If you like Bordeaux but not the prices\, then the South West region of France is calling you. Many of the wines are very similar to Bordeaux in varietal\, wine making style and quality. Add some unique grapes and ‘terroir’ into the mix and this is one exciting region for wine lovers.” \nThe South West France wine region has a long history of being treated as the red-headed stepchild of the French wine scene\, and therein lies a story. As always\, it is the age-old story of money\, politics and power. But\, as a result\, this region is also something of a best kept secret when it comes to affordable yet wonderful French wines! Look for regional names on the label like Bergerac\, Montravel (dry white blends)\, Pécharment (big\, reds)\, and sweet wines from Saussignac\, Rosette and Monbazillac. \nSo\, secure a bottle of wine from the South West region of France and join us for our upcoming Wine Wednesday on January 12th at 7:00 pm Eastern Time as we explore some of the fantastic yet somewhat obscure wines of this region! And as always\, please take photos of the front and back labels of your wine and send them to WineCat@pa.net by 8 PM Tuesday for inclusion in our weekly PowerPoint slide show.
