SUMMARY:Wine Wednesday ~ Wines from Indigenous Grapes
DESCRIPTION:Our next Wine Wednesday episode on February 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern/New York time is “Wines from Indigenous Grapes.” This topic almost screams “Italy!” The Italian peninsula is home to nearly 25% of the world’s 1\,200+ recognized wine grape varieties. But\, many other wine regions and countries can also claim a number of wine grapes as indigenous to their wine growing regions. Determining a grape variety’s place of origin has become far easier in light of the modern-day work of geneticists in the field of ampelography\, which is the science concerned with the identification and classification of grapevines. So\, do your research\, because a Tanat from Uruguay is not an example of an indigenous grape. Neither is Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley an example of an indigenous grape. Nor is Sauvignon Blanc indigenous to New Zealand.
